A friend told us you can park a motorhome for free overnight at any town in France Confused

We currently have a caravan but are thinking of buying a motorhome and wondered if anyone could clarify that you can park for free in montmorilon and is it safe.

I don't have a motorhome myself but as far as I know, you can park a motorhome overnight for free in a lot of towns in France you need to look for "Aires" A freind of mine goes all along the coast in the summer and says he never pays. Cool

You often see them parked up so just follow everyone else, or ask at the towns local Mayor office. In Montmorillon you will have to pay at the official camping site, but you can park up over night near to L'eclerc for free. I don't know of any others in Montmorillon but if you head south to Lathus saint remy and turn right at the church you will find a nice new free one on the right hand side.

Hope that helps, if others have more info please add it here.

Hiya Jen,

Just to back up what Fred said, sadly your friend misled you. There is no free parking of a camping car in every town in France. The most common charge is about 15 euros a night. There again you do have access to their water, electricity etc.

The site at Lathus is free with water and electric available but the rather swanky shower blocks are off limits to motorhomes and reserved for small children camping near-by. Nice site - as long as you can put with a bunch of youngsters singing the French version of Ging Gang Goolie until about 11pm.

There is an "Aire" at Moulismes free of charge - rather nice in the summer because there's a bloke with a frites van on site.Thumb

Happy hunting,

admiral

Didn't mean to put you off Jen. In fact the site is only swarming with small children - and sulky teenagers smoking fags and trying to buy beer in the local SPAR - in July and August.

The rest of the year the site is calm and tranquil with water and electric available to camping cars.

You still wouldn't be able to use the swanky loo/shower blocks though once September arrives. And before you ask, it's because the commune switches the water/electric off AND removes the tap handles.
