Apologies if this has been covered before. I did go through the forum but couldn't find an answer.

I've just bought a used car and need to register it. I know the process in outline and where to do it. The vendor said that the fee has to be paid by cheque and cash is not acceptable. The problem is that I do not have a cheque book. Does anyone know if the fee can be paid by debit or credit card?

Hello Brian,

I had this for changing our address on our car at the préfecture in Montmorillon. The charge was €2:50 and although I had cash and a bank card with me, I had to go back with a cheque. Wall

The only thing I can suggest is find someone with a cheque book and give them the cash, or see if you can get one from your bank or post office.

Not much help I'm afraid, but maybe someone else will have a better answer. If they wake up. Whistle

Thanks Fred.
I feared that might be the case. I'll have to go through the process to find out the cost before I can even get a cheque though. It's a 1977 Renault 4 and each time I've visited the site where it calculates the registration cost I get a different answer! Not surprised by this; It seems trés Francais!

Fingers crossed the process is successful. I'm looking forward to being able to blend in with the locals while motoring around the area...

Are you calculating it here: https://vosdroits.service-public.fr/part...9211.xhtml

You need to find out the cheval fiscal (CV) that will be on the existing carte grise, then it's that figure times the Taxe régionale for example you will see (Poitou-Charentes €41:80)

Round that figure up add the €2:50 and you should have the final figure

But if you go into the préfecture in Montmorillon they are very helpful and will probably do most of the paperwork for you, or at least tell you exactly what is needed including the fee. They speak English if your French isn't up to it. Thumb

Good luck with blending in, have you got your Beret.

Hi Bhouse or anyone else.

Quick question ... How long does/did the carte grise take to arrive after handing the forms in at Montmorillon Sous- prefecture please?

Thanks
Chris

Yikes.  Just started registering an Anglais motor in France and was horrified to now learn that:

A)  I have to PAY for a certificate of conformity.

B)  If I've read the paperwork correctly I have to pay an "emissions tax" at the end of the process.

This is outrageous and didn't happen with the first car we had here.....although that is going back a bit.

And another thing.....I apparently don't find out how much I'm going to have to pay in emissions tax until the end of the process. Huh

I know a couple of people who have pulled out of the process right at the end hurdle because of this tax, i.e. the charge was more than the car was worth.

Have things changed so dramatically since I went through all this several hundred years ago? Angry

With a bit of luck, the certificate of conformity MAY not be needed..........if section k of the V5 document is filled in with a type approval number, then a C of C shouldn`t be needed (anything registered after April 2003).
I read recently on an Anglo-info forum of someone using an on-line firm to organise a C of C, which ended up being dodgy, so do take care.
