We have a new neighbour (French) who is continually complaining about bits of our garden over hanging hers.

I've told her to cut the bits back herself.  She is not amused.

Now....she is moaning about two hazlenut tress "banging" against the tiled roof of a lean-to that she parks a car in.

She says I am legally responsible for cutting the hazlenut tress back to "an acceptable level."

We rather like them.  The branches are about as wide as large twigs.

Does she have a case in law or should I just tell her to prune herself?  Not the trees, just cut herself down to getting a life. Whistle

Jane - that's very comprehensive. It's certainly given me food for thought concerning our 25m conifer that's less than 0.5m from our chemin...

Cripes. eek

Thanks for that Jane.

I didn't know such comprehensive and archaic laws existed govening my garden shrubbery.

Should have known better.

This is France after all. Rules

Looks like I'm going to have get a highly skilled slim-hipped youth in to do the trimming.

(I hate giving in) Whistle

Me neither Admiral. I hate backing down too. I think I’d smile sweetly and say you’re doing her a favour, as a gesture of good will  Big Grin

Complaining about trees must be a French past time.  Within a couple of weeks of buying our house we'd had complaints from the neighbours on both sides.  What I couldn't understand is why they hadn't complained before to the previous (French) owner!  Admittedly, they were ridiculously large and certainly blocked most of the sun for most of the day from one of my neighbours' very large vegetable patch, so they did have a valid point.  It cost me €1500 to have 21 Leylandii taken down, apparently to loud applause from the neighbours.  I had hoped that such an expensive display of good-neighbourliness might have brought me a few free vegetables from next door - but I'm still waiting!

Yes, I think it might well be a pastime.

Our neighbours used to regularly prune or remove our trees without so much as a word, they proudly proclaimed that my Elder tree was dead when we first bought the house, well it would be after being sawn in half! On one occasion we arrived to find them having a bonfire, it was only when we went around the back we noticed we were a tree short and they were burning our tree remains!

I politely asked them to simply ask or tell us if a tree or shrub was bothing them so we could deal with it or agree they could and I've been in their bad books ever since!

They probably keep the trees short so as not to interfere with the low flying aircraft.

We often get Alphajets overhead at about 75m-100m and no-one seems to complain.
The migrating cranes don't like it much though.
