The new French smoke detector law comes into play on 8 March 2015
  • The owner of the house has to supply the detector.
  • You must perform regular checks to ensure it's working.
  • They must conform to NF EN 14604 and have the CE marking.
  • You must have at least one. (I'm not sure what room it should be in though if you do opt for only one)

Apparently insurance companies are going to enforce it by making you liable to a €5,000 excess of a claim if you don't have one or if it's not working.

*Be warned there are some scam artists going door to door telling you its obligatory that you have one, it is obligatory but DO NOT buy from them as some do not conform and you will be ripped off.

I've just been out and bought one because the law says I've got to have the ruddy thing.

The rub here is this: how does this work?  Who checks that each household has a smoke detector?

Has M. Hollande found a way around increasing unemployment and imminent deflation by hiring an army of petty minded bureaucrats who will march from house to house armed with their clipboards demanding to see smoke detectors?

I think not.  But there are again we are in France and anything is possible.

Just wondering.... Whistle

As far as I know there will be no official checks, but should you have a fire and have a faulty or no alarm €5000 of your insurance claim will go to the government and you will get a bill from the fire brigade.

Mine is still in it's package at the top of the stairs, my theory is the packaging will melt and it will look like I had one. ..................................... Edit: Just realised there is no battery in it.  Doh
