Just wondering how many of the Brits on this forum are working in France, and what they are doing, or are most people retired?

I think most are retired, or have started a small business.

It is difficult to get employment as there is very little work. Also it's next to impossible to get a contract for longer than 2 years even if you do find employment. That's not saying it's impossible. My wife found employment 22 hours per week, but the contract was only for three years. Now she has to go unemployed before applying again.

There are various ways of working for yourself. Have a look at this thread and ask AChane if you want to know more. Auto-Entrepreneur

I still work but mainly outside France.
My wife has recently become an autoentrepreneur here and in her area of work it was a fairly easy process, certainly simpler than working self employed in the uk. Do ask if you'd like to know more.

The taxes can seem quite high but they do get you and your dependant family into the excellent French health system.

Thank you, I will definitely be picking your brains on the future. It's good to know it's an easier process becoming self employed in France, as opposed to doing it in the UK. To make the move full time we would have to be looking at starting some sort of business up. No rush though as it will be in the next few years. Just going to concentrate on getting the houses sorted, so for now it will just be trips back and forth to do that.
