I agree with Brian that flooding doesn't seem to affect people in Montmorillon in the same way that it would in the UK i.e. inducing panic and demands for the government to do something about it.

The Gartempe has flooded many times over the years; the most serious being in 1992 (I think).  If you look around the town there are markers set into buildings showing the flood water level.  The most obvious is just down the road from the creperie where the first house on the left has a marker.  

I remember in 2012 when the entire area opposite the piscine flooded and the campsite had to be abandoned.

I hope you're not asking the question because you've just bought on the river. Doh
