Hello Rosie welcome to Around Montmorillon. 
Well it certainly is a beautiful area and if you like the countryside this is the place to be. Regarding speaking limited French I think you will find as long as you try a bit you will get on just fine, I have found the French people around this area to be very friendly. You will also find they will be more willing to try English with you if you get stuck once you have tried a bit of their language.
I couldn't speak any when I came here and even now my French is basic but I get by, and once I got over trying to figure it all out and just be myself it just seemed to work for me. I still get stuck sometimes when they talk fast but like I say I get by. There are a few French language schools if you want to go that rout, but shop around or ask first as prices vary.
As for finding out more about the area or living here, just ask away on the forum. You will find us a friendly bunch and although a small group at the moment with people like you having an input, we can make Around Montmorillon a great source of local English speaking information.
