Bonjour

We've just had an offer accepted on a property in L'Isle Jourdain and are hoping to complete by end of the year. Its going to be a holiday home for a few years and then we plan to move out full time. Its a bit of a fixer upper, so going to have lots of questions about who and where to go for trades and materials.

Hi Chrissy and  Bonjour  I'm sure you can count on plenty of help here,  just browse the forum and ask your questions, many here have DIY abilities and will point you in the right direction

I hope you enjoy your project and turn it into a place to move to full time

Jim

Hiya Chrissy and welcome to the SS Around Monty.

Fab choice of L'Ise Jourdain.  Myself and Madame Admiral had a place there for a couple of years and it really is a nice little ville.

Bars, tabac, presse, hotel, pizza place (if you like that sort of thing), a lovely restaurant slap bang on the river and a recently tarted-up Intermarche.

As Jim says, you'll find lots of help here with all things trade and materials - and advice on how to avoid the ptifalls.  Plus loads of other advice on living in France.

Oh, nearly forgot, you can go bungy-jumping off the viaduct in the summer. Whistle

Hello Chrissy welcome to Around Montmorillon.  wave

I agree with Admiral L'Isle Jourdain is a good choice, big enough to give you the basics without being too big. Also handy for the airports at Poitiers and Limoges.

Like others said, just ask away. We are a small group but you will find a friendly bunch.

Biggest tip I could give is: Be Very Very Careful who you employ to do any work for you. Shop around and ask for recommendations, and make sure you get a couple of Devis (quotes). Unfortunately there have been a few horror stories from "so called builders" from the UK not knowing what they are doing and causing a lot of heartache.

I'm not saying they are all dodgy. Far from it there are some very good tradesmen from the UK that live here full time and they have built up a good reputation, it's just the odd few that cause the problems. So be careful.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Chrissy  Bonjour We've done the same as what you're about to do. We bought our house in La Trimouille last November. We've only managed a few trips over since then, so it's going to be a slow process doing the place up. We have the same plan as you though..holiday home for now and eventually the big move. Can't come quickly enough. I'm still getting advice on here, but if I can help you in any way just let me know.
