I've been hearing reports of the cranes returning from friends in other parts of France but the first flock of the year has just passed overhead - about 350 of them.

It looks as if the winter may be passing - but there's always les giboulées de mars to look forward to!

We've seen a few crane formations heading north over the last few weeks but Grue Airlines must be offering special deals today.

In the space of 25 minutes, we have had 14 separate formations flying directly over our house. I estimate the total number at between 2000 and 2500.

They were flying fairly high today (probably about 600m) so I didn't take any photos as a series of black dots against blue never seem to impress anyone.

And as I type this, I can hear more approaching: "there's thousands of 'em..."

Yesterday evening at sunset 2 HUGE formations , Eastbound,  over Lussac chateaux, flight level below 1000 feet, making enough noise to wake up the cat ! impressive,
