In the UK, there are several chains of 'warehouse clubs' such as Makro. If you run a business (or convince they you do) they will issue a card that enables you to shop there. They typically sell in bulk and offer savings over retail of anything from 10% to 30%.

Does anyone know of a French equivalent?

This question possibly wins the all-time prize for the most baffling ever posted on Around Monty.

Have spoken to several builder/roofer chums and they know of nothing like Makro in France.  They wish they did because they'd be there every week stocking up on goodies to suit their various trades.

There you go.  Of absolutely no help whatsoever. Doh

Whilst not having used them I wonder if METRO is similar.

Good find Steve. It seems that Metro is part of the same group as Makro. However, they only seem to sell food related items so I'll carry on my (probably fruitless) search for an all rounder store.
